My name is Cheri Relph. My husband calls me the “Road Warrior” because I have a passion to experience the magnificent beauty of nature; I seem to always be planning a trip or on the go to get there. I love to live life to the fullest and enjoy every possible moment of it with a positive attitude. Two of my favorite quotes by Helen Keller are: “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing” and “keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow”
I have been teaching for 20 years and the grades that I’ve taught are 1st, 2nd, and combination classes of 1st and 2nd, also a 2nd and 3rd grade combination class. Watching my students grow and learn each day brings a true joy to my soul. Of course, each year there are always those amazing situations where I learn something extra special from them! I have been married to my husband and best friend Eric for 18 years. My son Elijah attended Chrysalis from the 3rd grade through 8th grade, so my first experience with Chrysalis was as a parent volunteer. He graduated from Foothill High School and has attended Shasta College and Cuesta College. Elijah has aspirations of becoming a helicopter pilot. Our family always enjoyed the family feeling at Chrysalis and we especially enjoyed the annual Chrysalis camping trips. My husband Eric is a retired teacher and subs for me when I have trainings to attend. My husband and son are both musicians and Eric enjoys coming to my class to sing and play his guitar for the students. He also is a rockhound and collector of fossils, so when we are studying earth science he will bring in his collection of rocks and fossils.
I love to write songs and use them in my classroom to encourage my students. Many times the lyrics are of a personal nature to add a smile to each child’s face just for the plain fun-of-it! One song that I like to start the day with is a song called “I was created for a special purpose”. It reminds the kids that each child is created for a special purpose, to go far in life and to walk in kindness.
Some of the highlights in our 2nd grade class have been: raising Monarch caterpillars and watching them transform from caterpillar to chrysalis and then on to butterfly; exploring soil, rocks, minerals, fossils, and volcanoes with a culminating dinosaur report the students do at home and present to their classmates; following the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog race and cheering on a favorite musher; exploring ant habitats with a class ant farm; exploring aquatic habitats with desktop aquariums; learning about our economy with a unit of study that ends with student run businesses; and a project called My Life So Far where families collect photos from birth to present age and a parent volunteer works with the students to produce a slide show of their lives.
Living that balance of teaching and making learning fun at each student’s developmental level is a gift that is truly only experienced in the type of environment that Chrysalis has to offer each of our students!
